Airdrie Residents Embrace New RCMP Online Crime Reporting Tool for Certain Incidents

Jul 20, 2023

In a bid to improve crime reporting and streamline police resources, Airdrie residents now have access to the Online Crime Reporting Tool recently initiated by the RCMP. This convenient tool enables individuals within RCMP jurisdictions, including Airdrie, to report specific crimes without having to call the police or physically visit the detachment.

RCMP – Royal Canadian Mounted Police

The Online Crime Reporting Tool covers a range of incidents, such as property damage or mischief under $5,000, bicycle theft under $5,000, theft under $5,000, theft from a vehicle under $5,000, and lost property. By submitting online forms, victims can report these crimes and help the police identify areas where their presence is most needed, leading to more effective patrols.

To avoid duplication of files, the RCMP stresses that only victims of the crime should utilize the online reporting system. Upon submitting the online form, individuals can expect a follow-up phone call from a police officer within five business days. It is important to note that online crime reports will receive the same level of investigation as incidents reported through traditional means.

However, there are certain incidents that cannot be reported through the Online Crime Reporting Tool. These include motor vehicle collisions, crimes involving personal identity, firearms, licence plates or decals, cases with witnesses or suspects, and items lost or stolen worth more than $5,000. Additionally, vandalized property that would cost more than $5,000 to repair is also not covered by the online reporting system.

The project was launched with the aim of providing the public with a more convenient and accessible way to report certain types of crime, as stated by the City of Airdrie. By encouraging reporting, the Alberta RCMP aims to ensure that all crimes, regardless of their severity, are recorded accurately, enabling appropriate deployment of resources to areas in need.

Furthermore, the RCMP recently introduced a mobile app for iOS and Android devices, offering online access to news, crime reporting, detachment locations, crime mapping, statistics, and initiatives like Project Lock Up. This initiative aims to keep the public informed and involved in crime prevention efforts.

While the Online Crime Reporting Tool operates 24/7, follow-up queries are only available during regular business hours, from Monday to Friday. It is important to highlight that crimes occurring outside of RCMP jurisdictions cannot be reported using this online tool. Various municipalities and cities, including Calgary, Edmonton, Camrose, Taber, Lacombe, Lethbridge, Lakeshore Regional Police, Tsuu T’ina Police, Blood Tribe Police, and Medicine Hat Police, have their own crime reporting systems in place.

Residents of Airdrie can now contribute to a safer community by utilizing the RCMP’s Online Crime Reporting Tool for eligible incidents. For any news tips, story ideas, pictures, or videos, individuals can contact news@icanada.online.
