2 more tuberculosis cases confirmed in Edmonton’s inner-city outbreak

Two more cases of tuberculosis have been confirmed in an ongoing outbreak among people experiencing homelessness in Edmonton’s inner-city area, health officials said Wednesday. The confirmed cases bring the total number of people linked to the outbreak to nine since it began nearly a year ago.

Public health officials emphasized that the risk to the broader public remains low. The outbreak is concentrated within Edmonton’s shelter district, where access to healthcare and housing stability can be uneven, and where close living conditions may facilitate transmission. Health authorities are continuing investigations to identify additional cases and determine the full scope of transmission dynamics within the affected community.

Authorities did not disclose ages or genders of the newly diagnosed individuals. They also noted that tuberculosis can be treated effectively with a course of antibiotics when detected early, and that treatment adherence is a critical component of controlling the outbreak. Public health teams have been conducting contact tracing and outreach to provide testing and medical support to people who may have been exposed.

The province has described the situation as a targeted public health issue rather than a broad community-wide threat. Officials say they are coordinating with local service providers, including shelters and health clinics, to increase access to testing, vaccination where appropriate, and education about tuberculosis symptoms such as a persistent cough, fever, night sweats, and unintended weight loss.

Residents in the Edmonton area are advised to seek medical evaluation if they experience symptoms consistent with TB or believe they may have been exposed. Health departments will continue to release updates as the investigation progresses and as more information becomes available regarding the outbreak’s trajectory and containment progress.
