Emergency teams continued to search for survivors on Friday after a landslide buried several residential buildings in Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County, in Chongqing, southwestern China. State media reported that the landslide struck downhill from clustered homes, causing multiple structures to collapse and trapping residents beneath the debris.

Local authorities have not disclosed an exact death toll or the number of people affected. Fire and rescue services, along with disaster response units, were deployed to the hillside site, where responders worked to clear rubble and assess unstable sections of the slope. Authorities described the operation as ongoing, with teams prioritizing rapid rescues and the safety of rescue personnel amid challenging terrain.

Witnesses near the Wujiang River area reported a rapid movement of earth and rocks that overwhelmed several houses. The incident occurred on Friday, prompting emergency management measures and temporary disruption to surrounding communities as teams established search corridors and established safety perimeters.

Chongqing’s municipal government and regional officials have pledged to cooperate with ongoing investigations into the landslide’s cause and to provide assistance to those affected. Local media quoted officials saying that the situation was dynamic, with conditions at the site requiring careful, staged exploration to prevent further collapses.

As of now, there has been no confirmation of the total number of people missing or injured. Rescue authorities have urged calm residents nearby to stay clear of unstable slopes and to listen for updates as crews intensify their efforts to locate any survivors.
